Enlightenment, quite simply, is seeing into one's true nature.
Enlightenment is attained when all limitations have been removed from the mind and one's positive potential has been completely and perfectly realized. It is a state characterized by infinite compassion, love and wisdom.
Someone who is awakened has gained insight into the workings of the mind, which keeps us imprisoned in craving, suffering and rebirth, and has also gained insight into the way leading to nirvana, the liberation of oneself from this imprisonment.
In Sanskrit, this state is called Moksha. It is the final extrication of the soul from samsara and bringing an end to all the suffering of being subject to the cycle of repeated death and rebirth.
Advaita Vedanta advocates liberation by recognizing identity of the Self (Atman) and the Whole (Brahman) through long preparation and training, usually under the guidance of a Guru. This involves effort such as knowledge of scriptures, renunciation of worldy activities and inducement of direct identity experiences.
So long as the mind is directed outwards, our energy continues to flow away from our Center, our inner peace and stillness, where the real sustainable love, joy and real answers to life are found. It's only when we turn our attention to the source of our sweet, calming spiritual essence on the inside, that we introduce the possibility of stopping this eternal egoic searching habit completely.
You may wonder why there are so few spiritually awakened people on the planet today. This is because most of you have forgotten how to relax, trust and enjoy your easy connection with the Source of the all things. All the answers are within you and you need to turn within to find them. The outer world will entice you to experience its rainbow of joys and sorrows. But if you want to walk the path to liberation, you must not fall prey to the trappings of this samsara for fulfilment. Instead, look within and you will find fulfilment easily.
When you are so incessant in your search, in your hankering, you may miss the wood for the trees. In such an eventuality, if you don’t get what you want, it is because you are forever in a state of want, need and demands. You are not in the right frame of mind – of allowing, acceptance and receptivity. And so this cycle continues. As long as you to place your attention outwards in the material world with all your craving and wanting, repeated defeats will force you to retreat backwards only to start again.
In the spiritually enlightened state, you will experience a feeling of sweet surrender and complete acceptance to the grand journey called life. Once you are awake to this profound truth, you realize your infinite nature, and become a powerful magnet that attracts everything your heart desires.
